Motown Legacy

As an irresistible force of social and cultural change, the legendary Motown portfolio made its mark not just on the music industry, but society at large, with a signature Motown Sound that has become one of the most significant musical accomplishments and stunning success stories of the 20th century.

Discover The Legacy

Like many other African Americans in the early 20th century, Berry Gordy, Sr. and his wife, Bertha Fuller Gordy, came North from Georgia to find a better life for themselves and their family.

Gordy Family

Motown is an extended family of some of the most iconic and influential artists, musicians and songwriters of our time. Brought together by destiny through their love for making music, they found themselves making history.

Motown Artists

The culmination of years of planning, hard work and generous contributions from dedicated donors, the highly anticipated, $50 million Motown Museum expansion project will grow the museum campus to a 50,000-square-foot world-class entertainment and education tourist destination.

MOTOWN MUSEUM LAUNCHES SIRIUSXM ‘LIVE FROM MOTOWN MUSEUM’ SHOW

September 2024

SiriusXM announced today (September 5, 2024) the launch of “Live from Motown Museum,” a new weekly show on SiriusXM’s Smokey’s Soul Town (ch. 74).

The weekly show will be hosted by John Mason, legendary radio personality and voice of the Detroit Pistons, and Levi Stubbs III, whose father Levi Stubbs was an original member of Motown group the Four Tops, beginning September 7. Every Saturday at 2pm ET, listeners can expect to take a musical stroll through Hitsville U.S.A. as the hosts play the biggest Motown Hits and share stories and history from the place where it all happened.

On the SiriusXM app, subscribers will have access to exclusive content as hosts Mason and Stubbs III interview a range of guests including Motown alumni, contemporary artists inspired by Motown and key players in the Motown constellation. Interviewees include Paul Riser Sr., Miller London, Robin Terry and more.

“As we embark on this exciting journey with our own radio show on SiriusXM, we see it as more than just a national broadcast opportunity—it’s a powerful platform to connect with Motown fans across the country on a deeper level,” said Robin Terry, Motown Museum Chairwoman and CEO. “This venture symbolizes a unique opportunity in music storytelling unlike anything else on the platform. For our institution to have a place on Smokey’s Soul Town on SiriusXM, for Detroit to be represented in such a meaningful way and for Motown stories to be told and shared is something that is transcendent as we continue our mission to amplify stories from Motown alumni and foster meaningful conversations to showcase Motown’s enduring impact.”

SiriusXM’s Smokey’s Soul Town is an exclusive channel curated by legendary singer, songwriter and producer, Smokey Robinson. Along with playing Classic Soul, R&B and Motown from the 60s and 70s, Smokey’s Soul Town features stories and insights from Smokey himself spanning his expansive career.

Eligible customers can get their first three months of SiriusXM streaming for free. Click here to sign up and experience all that SiriusXM has to offer. See Offer Details.
